Welcome to the Eco Mama podcast. I'm your host, Jaime Snell. I'm here today on focus Friday to share with you a little bit more about artificial colors. Tuesday, we've covered the importance of knowing how artificial colors affect us. And today I wanted to kind of wrap that up. It was a very long episode, originally and my apologies, but I actually had to cut it in half. And the reason was because I was in my car, recording the episode. My kids were at home. I needed a quiet space. And I apparently had lost connectivity for the wifi. And it stopped recording. I went to post it, I realized I only had 30 minutes of the hour. So, yeah, I didn't really finish everything. I was going to do today as a summary, from Tuesday, which I'll still do a little recap, but there was one thing that I really didn't get a chance to talk about on Tuesday. And that was how artificial colors are put into our pets foods and that's just wrong in my book. Cats and dogs don't see in the same we do. They don't have the dimensional site where we the different colors of the rainbow. They have a limited sight for colors. When manufacturers are putting artificial colors in to our pets foods, it has nothing to do with what the pets want or the pets like. It's all about selling to us, the consumer. If it's a brighter color or it looks more like the color of the meat they're describing on the bag, we're more likely to buy it because those colors remind us of freshness. I shared on episode one, I was in Walmart and out of dog treats. I found this small dog bone, like two bucks or whatever it was like, I just grabbed this or maybe it was$3 and I'm waiting in line. And thankfully there was a line because it gave me the opportunity to flip over the, dog bone and look at the ingredients and sure enough, it had yellow food coloring in it. And I was like, what? Why? My dog doesn't care what color this is. If anything, she wants to know that it smells good and that it tastes good. She can't see it. She can't see these different colors. So, I put it back and that's when we started,making our own dog treats, which I highly recommend if you have the time. The struggle I have with making my own dog treats, knowing that they are safer for her and they don't have those artificial ingredients, especially the artificial colors. Is that I have to make them in small batches. Otherwise, they will spoil because don't add preservatives to it. However, I don't have the time to make dog treats twice a week, which is what it boils down to. And yeah, I would love to. I just can't keep up with that anymore. Just can't do it. It's hard enough to keep the house clean laundry up to date. Kids' homework done and run a business and keep the podcast going and keep my sanity. So, yeah, looking for some good dog treats that all the artificial stuff that is grain-free. She's had so many allergies. She's a golden doodle. And the previous food we were doing also had artificial colors. I didn't realize it. Cause I didn't think to look at the ingredients for my animals food. I thought if I was buying more of a premium brand, And it costs a little bit more. And it was described as. Either clean ingredients or described as for pure breeds. I can just kind of assumed and if anyone should know better than assuming it's me and I, I totally missed it. I totally missed it guys. So we're doing a little, our own version of the elimination diet for the dog to try and get her allergies under control her ear infections had just been chronic, and she chews on her paws as if she's got peanut butter between her toes, 24/ 7. So working on that, if you hear that in the background, that's just my daughter making popcorn right now for her afterschool snack. Yeah. So that's, that's the big thing with, with it. So I would definitely take a look at the ingredients, illustrator animals too. Then to give you a quick summary of Tuesday, if you didn't have time to listen to the full episode, Artificial colors are hidden and almost everything we have, they do not change the flavor of the food. It only changes how it appeals to us. The look of it, like the vanity of it. We tend to go for brighter colors because we love the colors of the rainbow. Kids are more exposed and more vulnerable to the effects of these artificial food colors. They have found food color is linked to diseases such as. Cancer and leukemia, tons of allergies, neurodivergent issues. Those with ADHD, not everybody with ADHD, but many of those with ADHD can be affected more adversely by food colors by artificial food colors. However people without ADHD can be affected. So it doesn't seem to have a preference whether you have ADHD or not. It's just that if you do have ADHD, there's a chance that you're going to have more of a strong, prominent reaction of hyperactivity or hypersensitivity when you eat artificial colors. Also, in Tuesday's podcast, there were some really great resources that I put at the bottom for references and a Ted talk that I highly suggest you watch if you think that yourself, your children, or even your animals might benefit from cutting out artificial food colorings in your diet. And the safest way to do that is just to start making more things at home. Stop buying so many pre-packaged Look for fresh as possible. When it comes to vegetables and fruits finding organic will assure that your food has not been dyed a different color. I learned in this process of doing my research, that industry is even dipping oranges into an, a brighter orange dye. Because we're more likely to buy a brighter orange than a more adult orange. I don't know about you, but I just want it to taste good. I want it to taste like a nice sweet, juicy orange. So moral of the story is to read your labels. We say no thank you to artificial colors because we've seen how it can affect the mind and the body, especially of younger children. Be careful out there.
